Growth
Along with a group of friends in 1992, Uma and Muthuram decided to commit their spare time serving the socially marginalised. They had been involved in social activities since 1987 – from the age of twelve. The participants of the group believed that human beings are born to serve others and serve them well. This, they felt, not only provides self satisfaction but enables the promotion of self sufficient families and societies that lead to mature individuals.

In 1992, this group started visiting and organising recreational activities for residents of old age and children’s homes. Frequently, they imparted their knowledge to these groups through teaching. It was during this period that the group began organising blood donation camps.

In 1994, Uma attended a UGC Personality Development Camp which inspired her and the group to research and organise similar camps for neighbours, friends and ultimately schools.

In 1999, they registered the group under the name Suyam Charitable Trust to more effectively reach people. They continued to enable families, cancer patients and children harmed by child labour to cope with their circumstances.

The turning point for Suyam was when they assisted The turning point for Suyam Charitable Trust was when they assisted Mahalingam. That he survived his condition, against odds, gave Suyam the confidence that they could actually make a significant difference in the lives of people.

It was after the formation of the Suyam Charitable Trust that the group began the Nadaipathai Pookkal Program. They spent time with this community in Palavedu Pettai and materially assisted them with their basic needs. Some of the people in the community began asking for their children to be sent to school.

At first, Suyam sent many of these children to school by paying their fees. In 2003, they set up Siragu Montessori School when faced with increasing pressure from the community to educate their children. The school has been successful in imparting education to children growing up in marginalised communities.
